No-one likes to sit in the stand and see absolutely nothing, but often times that's a reality with late season hunts here in Georgia. We are blessed ( or cursed ) with an exceptionally long whitetail deer season here. Now the first and 2nd rut has come and gone many hunters find themselves trying to see deer a lot less have a successful hunt. Here are one or two methods that I utilize to make every trip into the woods more productive.
one. Find the food sources. The food sources you were hunting in the early season probably have been deleted so find the other ones. Bucks are moving just about only to feed now and they're going to find the nearest green food source to their bedding area.
two. Concentrate on the lunar tables. I am a firm follower the lunar table is an excellent predictor of deer movement. If the table claims that deer will move at noon then I make sure that I'm there. I have documented the link between the lunar table and deer movement.
three. Plant food plots. My opinion is that this is a later suggestion but there is not any better way to predict where the deer will be feeding when the acorns are gone than to create and fantastic food source for your deer. I like to plant oats as they are pretty easy to maintain and supply a good source of nutrition for your herd.
4. Hunt in areas that maximise your visibility. I've had great success in the thick stuff while chasing those very big greenbacks, but in the late season I need to be in a position to see as far as possible . Think about it, when the movement slows you can offset that decrease by increasing the area that you can see from your stand.
Use drives. Late in the season this is a great way to get the deer moving. Take them and use them and let me know if you find similar success using my advice. Make sure you check out www.huntingingeorgia.info for more hunting tips and equipment reviews.
Now get out there and hunt as you can't kill deer at the house!
